Profile
I have 25 years as an entrepreneur and Chief Executive, building innovative, market leading and profitable companies. Since semi-retiring as a full time CEO, I became an entrepreneurial advisor, coach and teacher for the past 15 years. I've served as President/CEO of Waters Associates (now Waters Corporation) from 1969-1980 and then co-founded Zymark Corporation in 1981, serving as President/CEO through 1996. I'm currently an entrepreneurial coach, investor and director for a number of early-stage, technology-based companies - many healthcare related.
I began my formal teaching as an MIT Sloan Senior Lecturer leading "Starting and Running a Successful Technology-based Company" and I'm currently lecturing at several universities in addition to my corporate coach and Director roles.
I have a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from the University of Rhode Island. I've also published extensively in trade magazines.

Launching Zymark

Introducing robotic automation to chemistry and biology laboratories. Although scientific instruments were advancing in capability and throughput, virtually all other laboratory work was manual, time consuming and prone to human error. Zymark's innovations stimulated a revolution in laboratory technology and processes.

Waters - HPLC Innovation

The iconic M6000 HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) pump, introduced about 1970, was the first HPLC product developed and optimized for HPLC. Prior to that, most HPLC instruments were assembled from components made for other applications and modified for HPLC.
Many HPLC pumps today have evolved from the innovative design of the M6000.
At its introduction, we estimated that we could sell a few thousand of these pumps over its lifetime. When I left Waters in 1980, we were selling over 5,000 per year and still growing.
